CAPTD

Hashtag Generator

Type what your post is about and get hashtags made from your own words, your place and — for photographers — real community tags for your niche. No AI and nothing invented: every tag is either your words joined up or a tag people already use. Worked out on this page.

Words or short phrases, separated by commas.

Write tags as

Your hashtags (5)

Instagram: up to 5 per post. Starting with 5.

#streetphotography #rainynight #neon #street #photography

From your words

Your tags are made on this page from what you type. Nothing is saved or sent to CAPTD.

Turn this into a whole campaign

Want the caption too? Spotlight's Campaign mode writes the post for each platform — caption and hashtags — and keeps every tag to words that are really about it.

Campaign mode is part of the Spotlight workspace on CAPTD's paid plans — see pricing.

How to use this

What it does

Turns the words you type into hashtags (“rainy night” → #rainynight), adds your place, and for photo posts adds real tags for your photography niche and the platform's photo community — the same tag lists CAPTD's caption generator uses. It starts you with the number the platform publishes, where it publishes one.

What you'll need

  • What the post is about — words or short phrases
  • Optionally, a place and your photography niche
  • The platform

Steps

  1. Type the subject of the post, separated by commas.
  2. Pick the platform; add a place and niche if they fit.
  3. Tap tags to add or remove them, then copy.

Reading the result

The top box is what you'll copy. Groups below show where each tag came from: your words, the place, your niche or the platform's photography community. The line under the heading says whether the starting number is the platform's own rule or CAPTD's suggestion.

Tips

  • Specific beats huge: #rainynightphotography finds the people who care, #photography finds everyone.
  • Capitalise each word (#GoldenHour) so screen readers read the words.
  • On Instagram, 5 is now the most a post can carry.

How many hashtags should you use?

Instagram: “You can use up to 5 tags on a post.” Instagram says a comment with more than 5 won't post. No spaces or symbols such as $ or %.

YouTube: More than 60 hashtags and YouTube ignores every hashtag on the video. Up to 3 are shown by the title.

X: No limit — X recommends no more than 2 per post.

Threads: One topic tag per post (up to 50 characters).

TikTok: Not published. Hashtags count toward the caption length.

LinkedIn: Not published.

Facebook: Not published.

Why it matters

Hashtags help people who follow a topic find your post. Too many, or ones that aren't about the post, look like spam — and on Instagram more than 5 won't post at all.

Common mistakes

  • Copying a block of 30. Instagram now caps a post at 5.
  • Tags that aren't about the post. X's own rules ask for hashtags relevant to the post.
  • Spaces and symbols. a hashtag ends at the first space; $ and % don't work on Instagram.

FAQ

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?
Up to 5 per post, according to Instagram's Help Centre. Older guides say 30 — that was the previous limit.
Does this use AI?
No. It joins your own words into tags and adds tags from CAPTD's hand-picked lists for photography niches. Nothing is guessed or invented.
How many hashtags on YouTube?
YouTube ignores every hashtag on a video with more than 60, and shows up to 3 by the title.
What about TikTok and LinkedIn?
Neither publishes a hashtag limit. On TikTok, hashtags count toward the caption's length.

TikTok, LinkedIn, Facebook, Bluesky and Pinterest publish no hashtag limit, so none is shown for them.
