Cost per item = everything one sale costs you: materials, printing, packaging, postage you pay and the platform's fees. The Etsy Fee Calculator works out those.

How to use this

What it does

Works out profit (price − cost), margin (profit ÷ price) and markup (profit ÷ cost) for one item — or, the other way round, the price that gives the margin you want: price = cost ÷ (1 − margin).

What you'll need

  • What one item costs you, all in
  • Your selling price, or the margin you want

Steps

  1. Pick which way round to work it out.
  2. Enter the cost and the price (or target margin).
  3. Read the margin and markup side by side.

Reading the result

Margin and markup describe the same profit from different ends: a print that costs 20 and sells for 30 has a 50% markup but a 33% margin. Most pricing advice talks about margin.

Tips

  • Count your time as a cost if the item takes you real work.
  • Leave room for discounts and sales: a 20% discount on a 40% margin leaves 25%.
  • Include the platform's fees in the cost — they come out of every sale.

What is profit margin?

Profit margin is how much of the selling price you keep as profit, as a percentage: (price − cost) ÷ price × 100. A 45 print that costs 18 to make and send has a 60% margin.

Markup is the same profit measured against the cost: (price − cost) ÷ cost × 100 — 150% for the same print. Confusing the two is the most common pricing mistake.

Why sellers use it

Margin tells you how much room a price has — for discounts, wholesale, fees and slow months. A price that only covers costs leaves nothing for the business.

Common mistakes

  • Adding 50% and calling it a 50% margin. a 50% markup is only a 33% margin.
  • Leaving fees out of the cost. platform, payment and postage fees all come out of the price.
  • Pricing your time at zero. it works until you're busy.

FAQ

How do I calculate profit margin?
Subtract the cost from the price, divide by the price and multiply by 100: (45 − 18) ÷ 45 × 100 = 60%.
What's the difference between margin and markup?
Margin is profit as a share of the price; markup is profit as a share of the cost. A 100% markup is a 50% margin.
How do I price for a margin?
Divide the cost by (1 − the margin): for a 60% margin on an 18 cost, 18 ÷ 0.4 = 45.
