Markup

Markup is how much you add on top of what an item costs you, written as a percentage of that cost.

In practice

Common markups and the margins they give: 50% → 33.3%, 100% → 50%, 200% → 66.7%.

Add a markup to your cost and see the price and the real margin.

Why it matters

Markup is a quick way to set prices from costs: cost × (1 + markup) = price. But it's measured against the cost, while margin is measured against the price, so the two numbers are different for the same sale.

A 100% markup doubles the cost and gives a 50% margin. Knowing which one a supplier, a lab or a pricing guide means avoids pricing far lower than you planned.

Example

A print costs 18 to make. With a 150% markup the price is 18 × 2.5 = 45, a profit of 27 on each one.

As a margin, that same 27 is 60% of the price, not 150%.
