The break-even point is the number of sales at which your takings exactly cover your costs, so you make neither a profit nor a loss.
Find how many sales you need to break even, and to hit a profit target.
Also used in: Profit Margin Calculator
It turns a pricing decision into a target you can check: how many prints, presets or sessions you need to sell before anything is profit. The formula is fixed costs ÷ (price − cost per item), rounded up.
Fixed costs are the ones you pay whatever you sell, such as a website, software or a market stall; the cost per item is what each sale costs you to make and send. Raising the price or cutting the cost per item lowers the number of sales you need.
A photographer plans a print sale. Her fixed costs are 1,215 (stall fees, frames for display and printing samples).
Each print sells for 45 and costs 18 to make, so each sale covers 27 of the fixed costs. She breaks even at 1,215 ÷ 27 = 45 prints; every print after that is profit.
