Reel

A Reel is a short vertical video post on Instagram and Facebook, made to be watched full-screen on a phone and shown in the Reels feed to people who don't follow you as well as those who do.

Why it matters

Reels are the format Instagram and Facebook show most widely beyond your own followers, so they are often how new people find a photographer or creator.

They are full-screen and vertical: Instagram recommends 1080 × 1920, a 9:16 shape, and accepts shapes from 1.91:1 to 9:16. Text and faces near the top and bottom can be covered by the caption and buttons, so keep them in the middle.

Example

A portrait photographer turns a before-and-after edit into a 9:16 Reel: the straight-out-of-camera frame wipes into the finished photo on the beat.

It reaches thousands of people who didn't follow her, because Reels are recommended beyond followers, and a few of them book a session.
