The R50's strong auto modes are a genuine starting point, but a few manual habits go a long way once you're ready to move past them.

Everyday shooting: Aperture Priority, f/4-f/5.6, Auto ISO
Lets you control depth of field directly while the camera handles exposure — the easiest bridge from full auto to real manual control.
Best for: Learning the basics without fighting the camera
Portraits: f/1.8-f/2.8 with a fast prime, single-point AF
The APS-C sensor's 1.6x crop already helps compress backgrounds — a wide aperture on a fast prime maximises the subject-isolation this body is capable of.
Best for: Kit lens or a fast 50mm-equivalent prime
Low light: keep ISO conservative above 3200
As an entry-level APS-C sensor, noise becomes noticeable sooner than on a full-frame body — favour a wider aperture over pushing ISO further where possible.
Best for: Indoor and evening shooting
The R50 has no C1–C3 positions for stills, but it has one Custom shooting mode (C mode) for movies: set up Movie manual exposure, then register it under Custom shooting mode (C mode) in the Set-up menu.
