The exposure triangle is the relationship between aperture, shutter speed and ISO — the three settings that together determine how bright or dark a photo comes out.
The exposure triangle is worth learning as one system rather than three dials because you can almost never move one setting without paying for it somewhere else. Every change made for brightness is also a decision about depth of field, motion, or noise. A photographer shooting a school play in a dark hall wants f/2.8 for light, 1/250s to keep the actors sharp, and ISO 200 for clean files, and cannot have all three.
Something has to give, and it is usually ISO, pushed to 3200 or beyond, with grain accepted as the cost of a bright, sharp frame. Knowing the triangle means walking into that hall already sure of which compromise you will make, instead of scrolling menus while the scene you wanted passes. It also tells you what is no longer free: once two settings are locked to the look you want, the third is fixed, not a choice.
A cyclist is riding past at speed and the goal is a sharp rider against a streaked, motion-blurred background. That look needs a panning shot at around 1/60s. In flat afternoon light, 1/60s with f/8 and ISO 100 gives a correct exposure. Now the photographer decides the background should also be soft from shallow depth of field, so the aperture opens to f/2.8. That is three stops more light pouring in, and the frame blows out.
Shutter speed is committed to the panning effect and cannot move. ISO is already at its 100 floor and cannot drop three stops. Raising the shutter to 1/500s would balance the exposure but kill the panning blur entirely and turn the shot into a frozen frame that misses the point. The only fix left that keeps every creative choice is a 3-stop neutral density filter to pull that light back out, which is exactly the corner ND filters were made for.
