Nikon pitches the Z5II on dark scenes: autofocus down to -10 EV and 7.5 stops of stabilisation. Its best settings lean on that low-light ability and on the second card slot. The screen-only Z5IIC shares the sensor and most of these settings.

| Everyday & travel | A | f/5.6-f/8 | Auto | Auto ISO | AF-A, Auto-area AF, subject detection Auto | Single frame |
| Cafés, aquariums & night streets | A | f/1.8-f/2.8 | Minimum shutter speed: Auto | Auto ISO, high Maximum sensitivity | AF-S, Single-point AF; Starlight view (photo Lv) on | Single frame |
| Portraits | A | f/1.8-f/2.8 | 1/250s or faster | 100-800 | AF-C, Wide-area AF (S), subject detection People | Single frame |
| Weddings & events | A | f/2.8 | 1/125s or faster | Auto ISO | AF-C, Wide-area AF (L), subject detection People | Continuous L |
| Kids, pets & sport | S | f/2.8-f/4 | 1/1000s or faster | Auto ISO | AF-C, 3D-tracking, subject detection Animal or People | Continuous H (extended) |
| Setting | What to set | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Focus mode | AF-C for moving subjects, AF-S for still ones; AF-A lets the camera choose | The Z5II is Nikon's first full-frame camera with AF-A (photo only). AF-F is the video full-time mode. |
| AF-area mode | Wide-area AF (S/L) or 3D-tracking for moving subjects; Single-point AF or Pinpoint AF for still ones; Auto-area AF for snapshots | |
| AF/MF subject detection options | People, Animal, Birds, Vehicle or Airplanes for what you're shooting; Auto for mixed scenes | Nine subject types, the same as the Z9 and Z8 according to Nikon. |
| Starlight view (photo Lv) | On for night and very dark scenes (Custom Setting d11) | A brighter live view for focusing and framing in the dark. |
| Built-in AF-assist illuminator | On for dim indoor events; Off where the light would distract (Custom Setting a11) | |
| Pre-Release Capture options | Pre-release burst 1 s for wildlife and kids (Custom Setting d3) | Works in C15 and C30 only, which record JPEG. |
| Setting | What to set | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Video file type | H.265 10-bit (MOV) for grading or HLG; H.264 8-bit (MP4) for instant sharing; N-RAW 12-bit (NEV) for maximum latitude | N-RAW records 4032×2268 (FX) at up to 30p. |
| Frame size/frame rate | 3840×2160 at 24p, 25p or 30p for a full-width image; 50p/60p for smooth motion | At 4K 60p/50p the image area is fixed at DX (cropped). |
| Tone mode | N-Log if you'll grade; HLG for HDR delivery; SDR for footage straight to social | Nikon gives N-Log 13+ stops in H.265 10-bit at ISO 800, its lowest N-Log ISO. |
| Shutter speed | 1/50s at 25p, 1/60s at 30p, 1/100s or 1/125s at 50p/60p | About double the frame rate keeps natural motion blur. |
| Electronic VR | On for handheld walking shots; Off on a tripod |
Low light: trust the autofocus, not the flash
Nikon rates the Z5II's autofocus down to -10 EV (at f/1.2). Custom Setting d11 Starlight view (photo Lv) brightens the live view so you can compose and focus in near darkness, and a fast prime at f/1.8 keeps ISO in check.
Best for: Night streets, candlelit rooms, aquariums
Weddings: write every shot to both cards
The Z5II has two UHS-II SD slots. Set Secondary slot function to back up, so a failed card never costs you the ceremony.
Best for: Weddings, paid events, once-only moments
Action: Continuous H (extended), 14 fps
Continuous H (extended) gives about 14 fps (15 fps with Silent mode on). For a split-second moment, C30 shoots 30 fps JPEGs, and Pre-Release Capture options keep up to a second from before the full press.
Best for: Kids, dogs, sport from the sidelines
Colour: Picture Controls and Imaging Recipes
Set Picture Control has Standard, Rich Tone Portrait, Deep Tone Monochrome and 20 Creative Picture Controls. Firmware C 1.20 renamed Cloud Picture Control to Imaging Recipe, for looks downloaded from Nikon.
Best for: Finished JPEGs straight from the camera
Landscape: f/8, ISO 100, self-timer
A dependable tripod baseline at the lowest native ISO, with the self-timer so pressing the button doesn't shake the camera.
Best for: Scenic, tripod-based work
Save setups to U1, U2 and U3 on the mode dial with Save user settings in the setup menu.
U1: Low light
A mode, f/1.8, Auto ISO with a high Maximum sensitivity, AF-S with Single-point AF, Starlight view (photo Lv) on.
U2: Events
A mode, f/2.8, Auto ISO, AF-C with Wide-area AF (L), subject detection People, Secondary slot function set to back up.
U3: Action
S mode, 1/1000s, Auto ISO, AF-C with 3D-tracking, subject detection Animal or People, Continuous H (extended).
Nikon says the Z5IIC has the same level of performance as the Z5II: the same 24.5MP sensor, 7.5-stop VR, -10 EV autofocus, 14 fps and 30 fps bursts, N-RAW and N-Log. Everything above applies, except for these differences.
| Setting | What to set | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Viewfinder | None: you frame on the 3.2-inch vari-angle touch screen | The Z5IIC's screen has about 1,040k dots against 2,100k on the Z5II. In bright sun, shade it with your hand or turn the monitor brightness up. |
| Card slot | One UHS-II SD slot: there's no backup recording, so the wedding row above doesn't apply | Use a V90 card for N-RAW, as Nikon recommends. |
| AF-assist light | There's no built-in AF-assist illuminator; use Starlight view (photo Lv) in the dark | Custom Setting d11 is on both cameras. |
| Subject detection | Adds Fish to People, Animal, Birds, Vehicle and Airplanes | Ten subject types, a first for Nikon. |
| Mode dial | U1 and U2 only (no U3), plus SCN with 15 scene modes | Use the Low light and Events custom modes above. |
| Focus point | Move it with the multi selector | There's no sub-selector. |
| Extras | Film grain options (photo and video), Breathing compensation and a REC lamp for video | |
| Sensor cleaning | Use a blower (Sensor maintenance) | There's no sensor-shake cleaning. |
