Aperture is the adjustable opening inside a lens that controls how much light reaches the sensor, measured in f-stops such as f/2.8 or f/11.
Aperture is the one exposure control that never does a single thing. Move it for brightness and you have also changed how much of the scene is in focus, whether that was the plan or not. Open a 35mm lens from f/8 to f/2.8 to save a dim indoor shot and the depth of field can drop from most of a room to one face, so a candid of two friends at a table leaves one of them soft.
There is also a sharpness cost at the ends of the range. Most lenses are at their softest wide open and lose crispness again past f/11 or f/16 as diffraction sets in, with the strongest results usually two or three stops down from maximum. On a landscape shot at f/22 to chase a little more depth of field, that diffraction softening can erase more fine texture than the wider sharp zone adds.
A photographer working a farmers' market at midday starts at f/8, 1/500s, ISO 200, and every stall from front to back is legible. Stepping into a dim barn, the same ISO and a hand-holdable 1/125s force the aperture to f/2.8 just to hold exposure. That is three stops more light, but now only the vendor's hands are sharp and the crates behind them fall away.
To keep both, ISO has to climb to about 1600 so the aperture can come back to f/5.6. Testing the same lens later on a detail chart, the photographer finds it resolves noticeably more at f/5.6 than at either f/2.8 or f/22. That is the usual pattern: the wide end trades sharpness for light and subject separation, the narrow end trades it for depth of field, and the middle is where the glass is actually at its best.
