Recommended settings

  • Single animal at 20-30m with a 400-600mm lens: f/5.6-f/8 typically keeps the whole animal sharp while still separating it from the background.
  • Small or close subject (bird at 5-10m): check the near limit carefully — depth of field can shrink to less than the animal's own body length at very wide apertures.

Tips for this niche

  • For an animal facing the camera at an angle, check that the calculated depth covers both the near eye and the far side of the head, not just the point focused on.
  • A longer lens at the same aperture gives less depth of field than a shorter one at the same distance — recheck when switching from a 300mm to a 600mm lens.
