A pre-save lets a fan save an unreleased song or album to their library ahead of time, so it is there automatically on release day.
Saves on release day tell a streaming service that people want the music, and a pre-save turns interest built before the release into those first-day saves. On Spotify, Countdown Pages give fans a pre-save button inside the app; they are for albums and EPs, for artists with at least 3,000 monthly listeners.
Other artists use pre-save links from their distributor or a link service, which ask the fan to log in with Spotify. Either way, the release needs to be delivered to stores early, and Spotify asks for an unreleased song to be pitched at least 7 days before release.
A duo delivers their EP to their distributor four weeks early. The distributor gives them a pre-save link, which they put in their bio and in a short video of the studio session.
By release day 400 fans have pre-saved it, so the EP lands in their libraries the moment it goes live, and those saves count from the first hour.
