An EPK, or electronic press kit, is a one-page or one-link summary of an artist that bookers, journalists, playlist curators and venues use to decide quickly whether to cover or book them.
The people deciding on a gig or a feature get many emails a day and give each one a minute at most. An EPK puts everything they need in one place: a short bio, the best two or three songs, a press photo they are allowed to use, highlights such as shows and press quotes, social links and a contact.
Without one, the artist has to answer the same questions by email, and the booker usually moves on to someone easier.
A jazz trio emails a festival booker with a link to a one-page EPK: a three-sentence bio, links to two live videos, a list of venues played this year, a quote from a local paper, a press photo with the photographer credited, and a phone number.
The booker listens to the first video, checks the venue list and replies the same day, because nothing had to be chased.
