Why Did I Miss the Best Part of Golden Hour?

You usually miss golden hour's best light by arriving and starting to set up right as it begins instead of finishing setup beforehand, so the first, best minutes get eaten by logistics. You arrived on location expecting good light, but by the time you were set up, the best part of golden hour had already passed.

Likely causes

  • Arriving right as golden hour starts instead of before it. setup, scouting and composing all eat into the window if they happen during it rather than beforehand.
  • Not tracking how much of the window is actually left. golden hour's length varies by season and location — assuming a fixed 'about an hour' can be wrong.
  • Underestimating travel time to the shooting spot. a location that takes longer to reach than expected can eat most of the window before you even arrive.

The fix

  1. Arrive and finish scouting before golden hour starts, so the whole window is spent shooting.
  2. Check the live countdown for how much time is actually left rather than relying on a rough mental estimate.
  3. Build in extra travel time buffer, especially for an unfamiliar location.
