How to use this

What it does

Calculates the sun's exact position for your coordinates and finds the next upcoming golden hour or blue hour window — golden hour is the warm, low-angle light shortly after sunrise or before sunset; blue hour is the cooler, softer light just before sunrise or just after sunset. Everything runs in your browser using the SunCalc library — your coordinates are never sent to our servers or anywhere else.

Reading the result

Tips

  • Golden and blue hour both shift earlier/later through the year and vary a lot by latitude — this tool is always calculating live for your actual location and the current date, not a fixed table.
  • At very high latitudes in summer/winter, one or both windows can be extremely long, extremely short, or effectively absent for parts of the year — that's an actual astronomical effect, not a bug.

What are golden hour and blue hour?

Golden hour is the roughly hour-long stretch right after sunrise or right before sunset when the sun sits low enough that its light passes through more atmosphere, scattering out blue wavelengths and leaving a warm, low-angle, soft-shadowed glow. Blue hour is the shorter window just before sunrise or just after sunset, when the sun itself is below the horizon but still lighting the sky indirectly — a cool, even, nearly shadowless light. Both are defined by the sun's angle relative to the horizon, not by the clock, so their timing and length shift with your location and the date.

Why photographers use it

Landscape, portrait and architecture photographers plan entire shoots around these windows because the light does most of the work for them. Golden hour's low angle throws long, soft-edged shadows and warm tones that flatter both faces and terrain. Blue hour's even, shadowless light is what makes cityscape and architecture shots work — it's the narrow stretch where a building's own lights balance evenly against a still-bright sky, a balance that's usually gone within twenty minutes either side.

Should I shoot morning or evening?

Morning golden hour tends to have cleaner air — less haze accumulated through the day — and often calmer wind for water reflections, but it means arriving and setting up in the dark, scouting a location you can't yet see. Evening golden hour is easier logistically, since you can scout the spot in daylight beforehand, and the day's accumulated haze or clouds can add dramatic colour to the sky — but popular spots tend to be busier in the evening. Neither is objectively better; pick based on which direction the light needs to come from relative to your subject, and your own schedule.

Common mistakes

  • Treating golden hour as just "the moment of sunset". golden hour is the whole run-up before sunset (and after sunrise), often 45-60 minutes of usable light — not just the few minutes the sun touches the horizon. Arriving only at sunset itself misses most of the window.
  • Ignoring local terrain and skyline. a mountain, building or tree line can hide the sun well before this tool's calculated sunset time, which — like every sun-position calculator — assumes a flat, unobstructed horizon. Scout your actual sightline in advance.
  • Assuming golden/blue hour length is roughly the same everywhere. it varies enormously by latitude and season. A rule of thumb learned at one latitude ("golden hour is about 40 minutes") can be badly wrong somewhere else — this tool calculates it live for your exact location rather than relying on a fixed average.
  • Ignoring weather entirely. this tool calculates the sun's geometry only — a clear sky and a hazy or overcast one produce very different golden hour colour and blue hour visibility. Pair the countdown with an actual weather forecast (the tool links out to one) before committing to a location.
  • Packing up the moment golden hour ends. blue hour follows within minutes and is often the stronger window for cityscape and architecture work specifically — leaving early to beat the crowd means missing the window many architecture photographers are actually there for.

FAQ

Why are golden and blue hour sometimes much longer or shorter than "an hour"?
Their real length depends on how quickly the sun's angle changes near the horizon, which varies by latitude and season. Near the equator the sun drops almost straight down, so both windows stay short and consistent year-round; near the poles in summer the sun grazes the horizon for hours, stretching — or in extreme cases eliminating — both windows.
Does this tool account for clouds or haze?
No — it calculates the sun's exact geometric position only. Actual sky colour and visibility depend on weather conditions, which is why there's a link out to an external forecast alongside the countdown rather than this tool guessing at conditions itself.
Is my location sent to a server to calculate this?

Why did it say no golden/blue hour window was found?
This happens at very high latitudes during summer or winter, where the sun's path relative to the horizon means one or both windows genuinely don't occur that day. It's an actual astronomical effect, not a bug in the tool.
Which is better for photography — golden hour or blue hour?
Neither, universally. Golden hour suits subjects that benefit from warm, directional, long-shadow light — portraits, landscapes, texture. Blue hour suits subjects that benefit from even, shadowless light balanced against artificial lighting — cityscapes, architecture, buildings lit from within.
