The single biggest variable in newborn photography is the baby's comfort, and almost all of that comes down to room temperature — a warm room keeps a newborn settled enough to sleep through pose changes. Getting this right before the family arrives, rather than adjusting a thermostat mid-session, is worth doing early.
Safety has to be planned, not improvised: any pose involving stacking, hanging props, or an unsupported baby needs a spotter's hands present at all times, composited out later if needed rather than risked in camera. Scheduling matters too — sessions booked in the first two weeks tend to go more smoothly, since babies are naturally sleepier then, and building in slack for feeding and settling breaks avoids rushing a family that's already exhausted.
A simple pre-session checklist — warm room, safety plan for any styled poses, realistic timing with breaks built in — replaces a lot of the guesswork that otherwise makes newborn sessions stressful for everyone in the room.
