Maternity sessions have a narrow comfortable window for the client, so timing and pacing matter as much as any camera setting.
Most maternity sessions work best scheduled in the third trimester, typically around 32–36 weeks, when the bump is well-defined but the client can still comfortably hold poses for a reasonable stretch — confirming timing with the client in advance avoids scheduling too early or too close to the due date.
Comfort should shape the whole session: shorter posing intervals with breaks, seating options readily available, and a location that isn't a long walk from parking all reduce fatigue that otherwise shows up as visible strain in the photos. Wardrobe guidance shared ahead of time — fitted fabrics that show the shape of the bump read better than loose clothing — saves a session from a wardrobe that doesn't photograph well.
A short list of flattering, comfortable poses prepared beforehand, rather than improvised on the spot, keeps the session moving and keeps the client from standing around while you figure out what's next.
