LRC File

An LRC file is a plain-text lyrics file in which each line starts with a timestamp in square brackets, such as [01:23.45], telling a player or app exactly when to show that line.

Use an LRC file, or tap along, to time a lyric video.

Why it matters

LRC is the simplest common format for timed lyrics: any text editor can open it, and music players, karaoke apps and lyric video tools can read it.

Timing the lyrics once, in a file, means the same timing can be reused for a lyric video, for captions and for a player, instead of being redone by hand each time.

Example

A songwriter plays her track and taps a key at the start of each line to make an LRC file. Line one reads [00:12.40]I left the light on in the hall.

She loads the file and the song into a lyric video tool, and every line appears on screen at the moment she sings it.
