Why Isn't the Moon Where I Expected It in My Photo?

The moon usually isn't where expected because moonrise azimuth wasn't checked for the specific date — the moon doesn't rise in the same direction every night. You planned a moonrise or moonlit shot expecting the moon in a specific spot relative to your composition, but it appeared somewhere else.

Likely causes

  • Not checking moonrise azimuth for the specific date. the moon doesn't rise in the same direction every night — checking a general 'the moon rises in the east' assumption isn't precise enough for a planned composition.
  • Confusing moonrise time with when the moon becomes usefully visible. right at moonrise the moon can be low, dim, or partly obscured by terrain, even if technically above the horizon.
  • Wrong date or time zone used when checking the plan. a planning mistake using the wrong date, or not accounting for the destination's local time zone, throws off the whole prediction.

The fix

  1. Check moonrise azimuth specifically for your planned date and shooting position, not a general direction.
  2. Plan for the moon to be somewhat above the horizon before expecting a clean, unobstructed shot of it.
  3. Double-check the date and local time zone used for the location, especially when planning ahead of a trip.
