Why Is the Sun in the Wrong Place for My Planned Shot?

The sun usually ends up in the wrong place because its position was checked only roughly, or only by direction and not elevation, for the specific date and time of the actual shoot. You planned a shot expecting the sun to be in a specific spot, but it turned out to be in the wrong place entirely — behind the subject, out of frame, or causing unwanted silhouetting.

Likely causes

  • Not checking sun position for the specific date and time. the sun's position along the horizon shifts meaningfully across the year, even at the exact same clock time.
  • Only considering direction and not elevation. azimuth alone doesn't tell you whether the sun clears an obstruction or sits low enough to cause backlighting.
  • Scouting the location at a different time of day than the actual shoot. a composition that looked right during a midday scout can put the sun somewhere completely different by evening.

The fix

  1. Check the sun's exact azimuth and elevation for the specific date and time you'll actually be shooting, not a general impression.
  2. Check both direction and elevation together — elevation determines whether the sun clears terrain or causes backlighting.
  3. Scout at the same time of day the actual shoot will happen, or check sun position for both times if that's not possible.
