Why Is My Flash Photo Overexposed Up Close?

A close-up flash shot is usually overexposed because the flash power wasn't reduced for the shorter distance — the same power that's correct at 4 metres is far too strong at 1.5. A flash photo of a nearby subject comes out badly overexposed, even though a similar shot from further away looked fine.

Likely causes

  • Flash power not reduced for the shorter distance. guide number math means the same flash power that's correct at 4m will be far too strong at 1.5m.
  • Aperture too wide for a close-range flash shot. a wide aperture combined with a close subject and unreduced flash power compounds into significant overexposure.
  • Not accounting for bounce vs. direct flash when the subject moved closer. switching from a longer bounced path to a shorter direct one changes the effective light reaching the subject substantially.

The fix

  1. Recalculate flash power for the actual current distance rather than reusing a setting from a different distance.
  2. Narrow the aperture or lower the flash power specifically for close-range shots.
  3. If using bounce flash, confirm whether the light's path length actually changed along with the subject's distance.
