Why Can't I Fit a Tall Subject Fully in Frame?

A tall subject usually won't fit in frame because you're standing too close for its actual height — either more distance or a wider lens is needed, and checking the vertical angle first tells you which. A tall building, tree, or other subject won't fit fully in frame from your current position, no matter how you angle the camera.

Likely causes

  • Standing too close for the subject's actual height. a tall subject needs proportionally more distance or a wider lens to fit fully in frame, and a tight urban or confined position may not allow enough of either.
  • Not checking the vertical angle actually needed. assuming the current lens covers the subject without checking the real angle needed can lead to arriving with the wrong gear.
  • Camera height not accounted for. shooting from ground level versus a slightly elevated position changes the angle needed to fit a tall subject.

The fix

  1. Check the vertical angle needed to fit the subject at your actual distance before assuming your current lens or position will work.
  2. If the angle needed exceeds your lens's coverage, look for a more distant vantage point rather than defaulting to an extreme wide-angle with more distortion.
  3. Account for your actual camera height when calculating the angle, since an elevated position changes the numbers.
