How to use this

What it does

Works out how many shots a hyperlapse needs, and how long both the shoot and the finished clip will run. Unlike a standard time-lapse — where the camera stays fixed and shoots on a time interval — a hyperlapse moves the camera itself a measured distance between each shot, so the planning unit here is distance, not elapsed time.

What you'll need

  • The total distance you'll physically cover (walking, driving, or otherwise moving the camera) over the whole sequence.
  • How far you move the camera between each individual shot.
  • Roughly how long it takes you to reposition and take each frame.
  • The frame rate you'll export the finished video at.

Steps

Reading the result

Total shots is how many individual photos you'll need to take. Estimated shoot time is a rough real-world duration, based on your time-per-shot estimate — actual time varies with how consistently you can reposition. Resulting video length is how long the finished sequence runs once all those shots are stitched into a clip at your chosen frame rate.

Tips

  • A wheeled slider, vehicle, or consistent walking pace makes the distance-per-shot far more even than freehand repositioning, which keeps the final motion smoother.
  • Smaller steps between shots generally produce smoother apparent motion but require far more frames for the same total distance — balance against your card space and patience.

What is a hyperlapse?

A hyperlapse is a time-lapse where the camera itself physically moves a measured distance between each shot, rather than staying fixed on a tripod. The result is a time-lapse with camera movement baked in — walking down a street, driving a route, or moving through a space — instead of a static, locked-off view of a scene changing over time.

Why photographers use it

A moving hyperlapse can cover far more visual ground than a static time-lapse — following a route through a city, along a trail, or through a building — while still compressing a long real-world journey into a short, watchable clip. Planning the shot count and shoot time in advance means you show up with enough battery, card space and patience for the actual sequence, rather than running out partway through.

Common mistakes

  • Underestimating time per shot. repositioning, re-leveling, and re-focusing between each frame takes real time — a rushed estimate here throws off the total shoot time badly across a hundred-plus shots.
  • Using inconsistent step distances. freehand pacing varies shot to shot, which shows up as uneven, jerky motion in the final hyperlapse. A measured stride, marked points, or a wheeled rig keeps spacing consistent.
  • Picking a step distance without previewing the effect. very large steps between shots can make the final motion look jumpy rather than smooth — shoot a short test sequence at your planned step distance before committing to the full route.

FAQ

How is this different from the Time-lapse Interval Planner?
A standard time-lapse fires on a fixed time interval with the camera staying put. A hyperlapse fires based on distance moved, since the camera itself is relocating between shots — this calculator plans for that distance-based workflow instead.
Do I need special equipment for a hyperlapse?
Not strictly, but a wheeled slider, vehicle mount, or at minimum a consistent walking pace with marked distances makes the step-to-step spacing far more even, which is what makes the final motion look smooth rather than jerky.
What frame rate should I use?
