Most landscape photos that don't work weren't ruined in the field — they were set up to fail the night before. Arriving at a viewpoint without knowing sunrise time, without a plan for cloud cover, or without checked batteries turns a scouted composition into a rushed guess.
The gear side matters too, but it's smaller than people assume: a sturdy tripod, a polarizer and a couple of ND filters cover the vast majority of landscape situations. What actually separates a strong landscape session from a mediocre one is showing up with a shot list already in your head — foreground, light direction, and a backup composition if the sky doesn't cooperate.
Weather is the one variable you can't control, which is exactly why the rest needs to be locked down in advance. A checklist that covers timing, gear and a fallback plan means a change in conditions costs you an adjustment, not the whole shoot.
