Highlight clipping happens when part of a photo is overexposed enough to lose all detail, recording as pure white with no texture or colour information left to recover.
Highlight clipping is worth avoiding at capture rather than fixing later because, unlike shadow detail, clipped highlights contain nothing to recover. When a channel hits its maximum value the sensor simply stopped recording, so a blown white dress or a featureless bright sky is not underexposed data waiting to be pulled back, it is a flat patch of pure white. Editing software can dim the area to grey, but no texture returns because none was saved.
The practical result is that high-contrast scenes should be exposed to protect the highlights, letting the shadows fall darker than ideal, since shadow noise lifts far more gracefully than a highlight rebuilds. This is the reasoning behind applying 'expose to the right' carefully rather than aggressively: get close to clipping for the cleanest shadows, but stop before the important highlights tip over. A blinking-highlight warning on the rear screen flags exactly which parts of the frame have already gone.
A photographer shoots an outdoor wedding at midday. The bride's white dress in direct sun reads at the very top of the histogram, and the highlight warning blinks across the whole skirt. The couple's faces are correctly exposed, so the temptation is to leave it, but in editing the dress stays a shapeless white blob with no visible fabric, seams or folds.
Reshooting at minus 1 stop brings the dress back with full texture and drops the faces slightly dark, which lifts cleanly afterward. The alternative on the day is to move the couple into open shade, cutting the contrast so one exposure holds both the dress and the skin. Shooting raw rather than JPEG also buys about half to one stop of highlight headroom, since the raw file often keeps detail the in-camera preview already shows as clipped.
