Galactic Core

The galactic core is the dense, bright centre of the Milky Way galaxy — the visually richest part of the night sky and the main subject most Milky Way photographers are trying to capture.

Why it matters

The galactic core is the bright, dense centre of the Milky Way, and it is the part of the sky nearly every Milky Way photo is built around. Unlike the general band of stars, the core is only above the horizon for part of the year and part of the night, so its visibility is the first thing to settle before planning anything else about a shoot.

In the northern hemisphere the core season runs roughly February to October, rising in the small hours early in the season and sitting higher and more vertical toward mid-year. Outside that window the core is below the horizon after dark and no camera setting brings it back. Latitude matters too: the farther north the shooting location, the lower the core sits and the more atmosphere and light pollution it has to shine through.

Example

In April at 35 degrees north, the galactic core clears the southeastern horizon around 3 am and is still low and steeply angled when astronomical twilight begins, so the practical window is short and the core sits down in the horizon haze. By late July the same core is already up as soon as the sky goes fully dark around 10 pm, standing high in the south and running more vertically, which suits a portrait-orientation frame over a landscape feature.

A photographer wanting the core arching over a specific rock formation checks both the date and the hour, then uses an azimuth reading to confirm the core will actually sit in the direction the formation lies, not off to one side of it. The core also drifts west through the night, so a composition that lines up at 11 pm may need the tripod moved by 1 am to keep the same arch.
